Music Therapy Synopsis: ORCF Philosophy
Knowledge is power, everyone heals in their own way and balance is the key to good health
The Music therapy program is going to be an expansion of existing Music therapy programs, specifically designed to suit the needs of members with cancer. We are working with renowned and world-leading partners in adapting a music therapy program for the needs of Citizens in the Ottawa region.
It is our core belief that everyone experiences cancer in their own way and no one journey is the same as another. Music therapy adheres to this belief and is individualized to meet peoples own therapeutic and musical needs. The Maplesoft Centre intends on having group sessions which will include playing music, listening to music, performing movements to music, writing songs and discussing lyrics. Many issues common to cancer, such as family disruption, loss of health, fear, and coping with treatment, are often difficult to express verbally. Music therapy can be used to encourage emotional expression, promote social interaction, and address issues in a non-verbal way.
So much of a person’s health is beyond the scope of just medicine. While people may receive expert medical care from oncologists in the region, they have no way of healing the other aspects of what composes who we are as humans. People are seeking emotional, psychological and spiritual healing. Music can be custom tailored to an individual to provide healing in all of the aforementioned areas. Overall, these therapies enable people who are diagnosed with cancer to heal in more than just a medical way, which in some cases can be just as important.
The great thing about this class is that there is no skill or experience required, everyone is able to engage with music in their own way. A participant must be a person who has been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. If an individual does have physical limitations, the course can be manipulated to fit their needs. The purpose of this class is going to be as inclusive as possible to people on their cancer journey.
